01Overview

The challenge

A specialist acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic in Massey, West Auckland had the clinical reputation but almost no digital presence. Prospective patients searching for help with pain, injury recovery or women's health could not find the practice, and those who did had no way to judge whether it was credible or how to take the next step.

My role

Designer and developer — I designed the site, built it, and did the search work to make it findable locally. One person across the whole thing, which is why the search terms and the page structure were decided together rather than in sequence.

Team

Direct engagement with the clinic owner and practitioner.

02Strategy & research

Systems thinking

A clinic website is not a brochure — it is a conversion path with three jobs to do in order: prove the practice can help with this specific problem, prove it can be trusted with a body, and make the first appointment feel small. The structure follows that order rather than the order the business thinks about itself.

Key insights

  • People search by symptom, not by modalitythe entry point is back pain or fertility, not acupuncture
  • Healthcare decisions are trust decisionscredentials and years of practice do more work than persuasion
  • Practical friction is real frictionparking, opening hours and location decide as much as treatment copy

Product decisions

  • Service categories written around the patient's problem — pain relief, women's health, healthy ageing, whole body care
  • Credibility placed above the foldyears of clinical experience and ACC-registered provider status
  • A free first consultation as the primary call to action, lowering the cost of saying yes
  • Practical reassurance — open seven days, evening appointments, private rooms, free parking — given its own band rather than buried in Contact
03User flow

User journey mapping

A first-time visitor arrives from search in pain and unsure whether acupuncture is for them. The journey has to answer that before it asks for a booking.

04UX engineering

Technical awareness

Design decisions carry engineering consequences. These are the ones I owned.

Technical considerations

  • Page structure built around the terms people actually search, with a page per treatment area rather than one catch-all services page
  • Local relevance signals — suburb, service area and practice details — carried in the content and structure rather than bolted on
  • Semantic headings and descriptive copy, so the pages are legible to search engines and screen readers alike

State management

Booking is the only stateful moment on the site, so it stays a single decision: one primary action repeated in the header, the hero and the close, all pointing at the same place.

Performance

Image weight is the main cost on a photography-led clinic site, so treatment imagery is sized to its display slot. Page speed is a ranking factor and a bounce factor at the same time.

Impact & reflection

The instinct on a healthcare site is to explain the modality. What the visitor actually needs is to see their own problem named, and then to be told that starting is safe and easy.

Lessons learned

  • For a local business, search visibility and conversion are the same design problem, not two projects
  • Trust signals are content, not decoration — credentials earn their place above the fold
  • The cheapest conversion win is removing practical doubthours, parking, location
